Samsung imagines an elastic OLED screen that sticks to the skin

Samsung wants to go further in the field of foldable screens by imagining a stretchy and sticky display on the skin, as a dressing. For the moment, this is only a prototype, but this technology could be available in infinite quantities.

Samsung relies heavily on flexible displays in the future. We already have foldable screens in consumer products, as in the Z Fold 2, but these tiles remain relatively «rigid» in their use. Samsung wants to go further with elastic plates.

The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) presents a new kind of display: the OLED Skin screen. This is an elastic OLED display that can stretch up to 30% without any image or performance degradation. This screen can stretch and bend more than 1000 times while keeping all its capabilities.

To achieve this, Samsung researchers used elastomer, an elastic polymer as a surface, without changing the process of manufacturing semiconductors. This gives us a screen that is still very basic, but that promises a lot for the future. Remember that we are dealing with a prototype.

SAMSUNG WANTS TO USE ELASTIC SCREEN FOR MEDICAL PURPOSES

The first use imagined for this type of screen is a kind of dressing. Hanging on the wearer’s skin, around the wearer’s wrist, this OLED skin slab allows simple information such as heart rate to be displayed much more accurately than a classic smartwatch. Samsung argues that this type of product would make it possible to measure a patient’s health over the long term, since the well-glued screen would not interfere with it. In addition, such a device makes it possible to have the data directly in front of the eyes without going through an external display.

Samsung does not hide its ambition with this techno, evoking a commercialization in the future. However, it is only at this stage and it will take some time for mass production. Note that the Korean firm only mentions a medical use for the moment. So we should not expect to see an elastic display on a smartphone, at least not immediately.
