Sold for nearly 300 dollars starting April 8, this connected mask wants to balance design, technology and especially protection against the coronavirus. Promoted by artist Will.i.am, the Xupermask incorporates fans, filters, but also in-ear headphones for the wireless use of a smartphone.
Even if vaccination pushes back the pandemic and some countries start to reopen everything, it will be necessary to keep the barrier gestures for a few more months, and wear a mask in certain circumstances. That’s why brands are working on “smart” masks and, after Razer and LG, Honeywell is launching its Xupermask from Wednesday.
Producer and artist Will.i.am teamed up with this brand to launch this so-called “smart” mask because it protects both coronavirus and other viruses, while being connected. For the singer of the Black Eyed Peas, who is already associated with Tesla or Beats, the mask can become an accessory like a hat, glasses or… shoes. “We have long regarded footwear as protective equipment, but it is only cultural objects that we buy,” he said on CNBC. The mask should require the same kind of attention to detail, without compromising aesthetics to protect yourself and others.”
Two three-speed fans and filters
Concretely, this «super mask» is based on the main principles of Razer with a futuristic design, a modern coating, and a silicone contour to ensure that it adapts safely regardless of the shape of your face. It also features two three-speed fans for better breathability, and HEPA filters to make sure the inhaled air is as pure as possible. For the design, the brand chose José Fernandez, the designer of Elon Musk’s outfits for SpaceX, or masks of Marvel heroes.
This mask features in-ear noise-cancelling headphones with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, as well as an included microphone to make sure people can hear you. You can pair it to your smartphone and use it to make wireless calls or simply listen to music.
About 300 dollars !
Like the Razer model, it features LED lights to illuminate at night or in a dark room. It is powered by a battery with an estimated battery life of seven hours and, at home, it is possible to wear the mask while recharging it.
The Xupermask will be available in two versions — white, grey and orange or black and orange — and comes with a small pouch that contains the equivalent of three months of HEPA filters, ear tips, a USB-C charging cable and a carrying case. Obviously, all this has a cost: 299 dollars! It will be available from April 8 in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and also in Europe. We will see if the mask becomes as popular as the cap or the shoe, and if it will be the accessory of the 21st century. At nearly 300 euros, its democratization will not be for now.
