GameMaker is a nice system for creating 2D pixel games—it is designed by game industry veterans and it shows. Features such as a solid built-in tile map editor make it one of the best 2D choices out there. the in-built scripting language is fairly easy to use, and you can author an entire game just with the drag and drop interface if the thought of coding scares you off.

Pros

▶ An excellent selection of built-in 2D tools and routines.

▶ Good and friendly support via the YoYo forums.

▶ Good and friendly support via the YoYo forums.

Cons

▶ The Master Collection cost is overly expensive.

Thanks to recent developments, I am getting more and more excited about GameMaker. The first bit of good news is that YoYo have finally opened an asset store, called the YoYo Marketplace. It is still early days yet, but this is such a positive step. As with the Unity Asset Store, the YoYo Marketplace is split into categories, where you can buy art, audio, extensions, scripts and full projects. I am optimistic that YoYo will continue to add more content to the Marketplace, and my feeling is that GameMaker will become a viable alternative to Unity. I would add though, that I still think YoYo need to reconsider their pricing for the Master Collection!

The other GameMaker news, and this is the biggie, is that they have added PlayStation export modules, and right now, they are free to licenced PlayStation developers. this is amazing news, and several high-profile indie titles are being developed in GameMaker now and on the way to PlayStation, including Vlambeer’s Nuclear throne, and Dennaton Games’s Hotline Miami 2.

So if you would like to release on PlayStation 3, 4 or Vita, right now GameMaker is the best oice if you are on a budget.
